Below are some of my favorite FREE VST instrument and effects plug ins. Obviously what you pay for is what you get and if you can't afford the thousands of dollars for a full sample library then these will do the trick just fine.
Please note, all links below are to the VST related websites, you should read up on any VST before downloading and use AVG free as a virus check.
Mr Ray - Info (Download Link)
MrRay is an awesome Electric Piano emulation and probably one of the best Fender Rhodes Emulations out there. It is capable of producing the sound of the Electric Pianos of the
seventies, like the Fender Rhodes and the Wurlitzer EP, as well as the Yamaha DX7 FM Piano - well worth the download.
Miles'tone
An emulation of a Trumpet it reflects the behaviour of
a real trumpet, reacts to pitch changes and air pressure in a very natural way, and has a nice and warm timbre.
It works with a Wind Controller but it can also be played with a traditional MIDI keyboard thanks to the built-in dedicated envelope generator.
Linplug - Saxlab
A fairly decent Saxophone VST that features Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones and also a few different Brass and Woodwind instruments.
Its extremely easy to use, has some great presets and the behaviour of Saxlab is similar to Miles'tone, where it reacts to pitch changes, expressions etc - deffinatly worth a look.
Alpha 3
Focussed on the essential modules of an analogue synth, this cool VST offers true hands on operation. Everything is where it should be and nothing is more complex than it should be.
Wider Boy - Stereo Enhancer
Wider Boy Pro is a stereo enhancer insert
and mastering effect. Unlike most other
stereo enhancers, Wider Boy Pro uses the
fact that low frequencies are less directional
than higher frequencies. By separating out
the two frequency bands, and selectively
applying different processing to Bass and
Treble, Wider Boy Pro realizes a wider stereo
sound without losing the punch of the bass.
The parameter range and flexibility also
provides the possibility to generate a number
of interesting additional effects.
DVS Guitar
This is based on a sampled guitar and includes Overdrive, Reverb and
Flanging. It's good for leads and heavy sounds, and very realistic if
your good with a pitch bend controller.
