Matt Amy

Born in 1985, Matt Amy began his musical adventure through childhood experiments upon the piano keys. This interest grew and intensified over many years until the day he picked up his first Trombone at the age of twelve.

Matt’s passion for music was invigorating but his desire really flared at the age of fifteen years when he fell in love with the Bass Trombone.
He immediately made the transition and instantly formed an amazing camaraderie with an untamed piece of brass. From this new found enthusiasm, Matt Amy further explored the world of music, developing a remarkable talent for composition and arranging.

At the age of 17 Matt received both his first professional performing and arranging job and since then he has been busy writing arranging arrangements for small groups, orchestras and big bands from all over the world including countries such as:

  • Canada
  • France
  • U.S.A
  • England
  • Scotland
  • Iran
  • New Zealand
  • Russia
  • Germany

In 2006, at the age of 21, Matt Amy completed his Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts, majoring in Composition (Jazz). While attending the V.C.A Matt studied composition under the mastery of Mark Pollard, Daryl McKenzie, Johanna Selleck and George Papanicolaou.

Matt utilizes a little bit more of his spare time supplying arrangements for bands, artists, schools, forces bands and popular T.V shows such as:

  • Australia's Got Talent (Network Seven - 2007)
  • Dancing with the stars (Network Seven - 2007 - 2008)
  • Singing Bee (Network Seven - 2007)
  • It Takes Two (Network Seven - 2007 - 2008)

  • John Chaplin - Fleming (Scared Weird Little Guys)
  • Bob Valentine
  • Wilbur Wilde
  • Death Defying Acts (Copyist - 2007)

Through Matt Amy's passion for writing he decided to build his own Big Band and since doing so in 2004, it has already become one of Melbourne's premier Big Bands employing the "cream of the crop" jazz and session musicians. The Really Big Band holds a monthly residency at one of Melbourne's classiest venues "Manchester Lane" and is to record and release their debut album in early 2008, you can check out the Really Big Band here
